Dame Twila has always excelled more physically and enjoyed learning every style of fighting that she had access to. Prince Cassian and she became best friends at about the age of 6 or 7, when she started taking lessons with the same tutors as him in the Imperial Palace. They have been stuck at the hip since. 

After learning a few different fighting styles, Dame Twila was proud to be an Emberkeeper because fighting is their specialty. Her father and brothers were excellent at their craft, and they taught it well. They would hound their knights and work them relentlessly, but those men will always be ready for battle.  

When Twila had her debutant ball, it was apparent she was awkward being the center of attention at social events. Of course, Prince Cassian saved her from the situation. He teased her about her awkwardness and then stole the spotlight. Even though he was by her side the whole time, everyone was looking at him. 

After the ball, everyone knew that Prince Cassian would end up marrying Lady Twila, as they were best friends of the opposite sex. That’s how it works. Right?  

Soon after her debutante ball, the talk about Prince Cassian and Lady Twila marrying ended. Lady Twila was knighted and became Dame Twila. Her knighthood would pose a significant complication if they wanted to marry. Princes and Princesses have married knights, but it was never one of the top 3 heirs to the Imperial throne. 

As soon as it was announced that the Emberkeeper heir would be Lady Tatiana and not Dame Twila as expected, Dame Twila moved to the Prince’s palace to train to be an Emperor’s aide. The Emberkeepers never gave a reason for making Lady Tatiana heir. 

The Emberkeeper Duchy is a matriarchy with a knightage that rivals the Empire’s Knights Orders. The Imperial family keeps them close because they are the Empire’s biggest defense. Emberkeeper children regularly visit the imperial palace and are typically playmates of the Princes and Princesses. Usually, the Emberkeeper heir is the eldest daughter, but the position has sometimes been passed to a younger daughter.
